Clean Water -- the Foundation of Great Beer

Posted by: Makebeer on 10/12/2011
Water covers seventy-five percent of the earth and is the main ingredient in the beer we drink. Needless to say without water we wouldn’t be drinking beer, dreaming of a warm beach or making the necessary preparations to make our brew.

Water is a brewer’s canvass for creating an exceptional home brew that they can be proud of. Using clean water will result in a tasty beverage that you will be passionate about sharing with your family and friends. You wouldn’t paint on a dirty canvas and you shouldn’t brew beer with water you wouldn’t want to drink. Simply put don’t let over chlorinated or foul tasting water ruin your efforts to produce a great beer.

Listed bellow are several common solutions for purifying water to ensure great tasting water and in turn a great tasting beer.

Solution 1: Purchase a water filter. At the Make Beer. Net office we use a Brita water filter that has does  an excellent job of purifying our water and removing any chlorine.

Solution 2. Make a quick trip to your local store and purchase water. Filtered water is readily available in two-gallon jugs. Or if you are feeling ambitious you can purchase a 5-gallon water cooler jug.

Solution 3: Boil your water for fifteen-minutes before chilling it to ensure the temperature is right before adding the yeast. To do this you must either be willing to boil multiple pots of water or use a five-gallon pot.

Thanks for reading folks and we hope this helps in your pursuits of crafting the perfect home brew. And remember a great general guideline to follow when deciding if you need to filter your water is if you wouldn’t drink it without filtering it don’t brew with it before filtering it.

$4.99 will get you a 5 gallon jug of spring H2O in most wholesales clubs. Great for making a 6 gallon batch of home brew.

Also, you can get good bottled water at Dollar Tree.. at least our local store. I think it's Arrowhead.

Personally, I like the idea of buying filtered water at the store. Around here all the markets have a machine that filters local water on demand for very reasonable prices.

"@max mcclain. The complete beer package that we sell that produces the highest alcohol percentage is the Complete Sparkling Ale package. The recipe about is also good one. You could also get the Australian Pale and use 1 can of unhopped light malt syrup and 500 grams of dextrose. Just to keep it simple." Read more

"@Bob I would force carbonate your beer instead of using the carbonation drops. How big is your keg? Standard Cornelius kegs are 5 gallons. This will leave about a gallon of extra beer to bottle. Use the carbonation drops in the bottles. If you want to naturally carb the beer in your keg, use about 1/4 cup of corn sugar (dextrose) boiled with a 1/4 cup of water. Add to keg first. Add the beer. Seal. Leave at room temperature for a week while the yeast produces CO2." Read more
